“Lufthansa” marks 30 years of operations at Heydar Aliyev International Airport

22 January 2026

The 30th anniversary of Lufthansa Group’s operations in Azerbaijan represents a significant milestone in the strategic, sustainable, and reliable partnership established between Baku and leading aviation hubs across Europe and the world.

Since 1995, Lufthansa has operated regular flights to Baku, directly connecting Azerbaijan with Europe’s key air transport hubs. Over the years, the airline has served thousands of passengers on the Baku–Frankfurt route, delivering flights in line with high standards of safety, efficiency, and service quality.

Lufthansa’s long-term and stable presence in the Azerbaijani market has made a substantial contribution to strengthening the country’s position within the international aviation system, while also reinforcing the role of Heydar Aliyev International Airport as a regional hub.

Beyond supporting the steady growth of business, tourism, and transit passenger flows, Lufthansa’s flight network has played a key role over the past 30 years in ensuring uninterrupted passenger transportation during major global events such as the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix and COP29. This cooperation has facilitated the expansion of both business and leisure travel, strengthened Azerbaijan’s international connectivity, and enhanced overall mobility.

Julia Hillenbrand, Vice President Commercial for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at Lufthansa Group, noted:

“Baku is not just a destination for us – it is a reflection of a trusted partnership built over many years. The confidence shown by our passengers in Azerbaijan forms the foundation of Lufthansa’s sustained presence in this market.”

Teymur Hasanov, Director of Heydar Aliyev International Airport, emphasized:

“Our 30-year cooperation with Lufthansa clearly demonstrates the strengthening of Baku Airport’s position as a reliable connection point within the international aviation network. This partnership is not limited to today’s achievements; it also creates broader route opportunities and strategic development prospects for the future.”

Germany’s national carrier currently operates four weekly flights on the Baku–Frankfurt–Baku route and will continue daily direct flights to Baku during the summer 2026 season.
